Think of the Indian passport and a picture of navy-blue booklet appears in mind. But it is important for you to know that this is not the only passport that the Indian government issues. There are different types of passports and each of them are for a specific purpose. So there are four types of passports available in different categories and colours.
Here’s an easy guide to help you understand these passports.
So this one is the regular and basic passport issued to Indians. This passport can be used for studying abroad, travelling abroad and going on business trips, among others. These passports remain valid for 10 years (for adults), while for kids it’s 5 years. One can choose between a 36-page booklet or a 60-page, depending on your travel requirements.
But in a recent update, India is planning to roll-out e-passports which look like normal passports. However, these passports are equipped with a chip with all your details. This makes them safer and easier to scan at airports. But worry not as your existing passport is still valid until it expires.
Another type of passport available here is the white passport. It is issued for government employees who need to travel abroad for official duty. This passport is issued to government people or members of the armed forces posted in foreign countries. It’s not meant for personal trips and the passport remains valid for the duration of the assignment only. It is issued only after the person’s department approves it.
Then comes the maroon passport which is issued only to diplomats, senior officials and ministers (and Members of Parliament sometimes). Their immediate family members may also get one if they are traveling with them. This passport often comes with added privileges including faster processing at airports or visa waivers in some countries.
Apart from the passport’s colour, you may notice another marking: ECR (Emigration Check Required) or Non-ECR.
ECR allows people with lower education qualifications who are traveling for work to certain countries. It protects them from exploitation. They must get clearance from the Protector of Emigrants before leaving.
Non-ECR means you are exempt from this requirement. Most graduates, professionals, and frequent travelers fall into this category.
Emergency Certificate (EC): So EC is a one-way document. It is issued by Indian embassies abroad and given to citizens who lost their passport or whose passport expired.
So, if you are planning a vacation or job abroad, the passport you carry tells a story about your journey.
