Yashasvi Jaiswal, the dynamic Indian opener, is on the cusp of achieving a significant milestone. He is just 97 runs short of becoming the fastest Indian to reach 2,000 Test runs. As India prepares to face England in the second Test at Edgbaston starting July 2nd, the young left-hander has his sights set on breaking a 49-year-old record held by Sunil Gavaskar.
India's Yashasvi Jaiswal is close to breaking a long-standing record.
Jaiswal's consistent performance has been a bright spot for India during a period of transition in Test cricket. His recent century in the first Test at Headingley showcased his talent, although it wasn't enough to prevent India from losing by five wickets. Despite setting a challenging target of 371, India was taken by surprise by England's successful chase led by Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, and Joe Root, giving England a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
Team India prepares for the second test at Edgbaston.
Jaiswal's individual form remains a key source of hope for India as they look to rebound at Edgbaston. In just 20 Tests, he has accumulated 1,903 runs at an impressive average of 52.86.
Currently, the record for the fastest Indian to reach 2,000 Test runs is held by the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, who achieved this feat in his 23rd Test in 1976. Gavaskar went on to become the first cricketer to score 10,000 Test runs. Following Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag reached the 2,000-run mark in their 25th Tests.
With his elegant strokeplay and remarkable composure, Jaiswal has the opportunity to join and even surpass these legendary players, providing India with a crucial boost in a must-win Test.
